[24 Dec] : Recipients of The MTSF 2014 Science and Technology Award

HIR offers its heartiest congratulations to Professor Dr. Ramesh Singh and Professor Dr. Mohd Hamdi Abd Shukor, Faculty of Engineering, for winning the 2014 Malaysian Toray Science Foundation S&T Award based on their research funded by HIR.

Malaysia Toray Science Foundation (MTSF) concluded another successful year 2014 with the hosting of its 21st Prize Presentation Ceremony on 2 December 2014 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation, YBhg Datuk Dr. Ewon Ebin, in the presence of Dr. M. Miyagawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia and Mr. H. Murakami, the Senior Vice President of Toray Industries Inc., Japan. Among the 200 guests present was a group of 40 Toray Group (Malaysia) (TGM) employees, who were invited to witness the CSR projects initiated by Toray in Malaysia. In this ceremony, the “MTSF Science & Technology Award” was awarded to Professor Dr. Ramesh and Professor Dr. Hamdi as the outstanding Malaysian scientists in recognition for their scientific achievements and contributions in the country.

Professor Dr. Ramesh and Professor Dr. Hamdi, both from the Faculty of Engineering, have outstanding records of achieving success in science & engineering as clearly demonstrated by the patents, publications, supervision of undergraduate & postgraduate students and the attainment of various research grants and awards. The diversity of their research interests is a testament of their contribution towards the enhancement of science and technology in Malaysia. Their current research interests include the development of nanoceramics, processing of engineering ceramics and composites, failure analysis, materials degradation, product development, coating technology and microwave technology.

The group constantly seeks new methods/processes to allow the usage/implementation of ceramics in the local industry with the aim to promote the use of local resources and Made-in-Malaysia products. The group has anchored and participated successfully in various industrial-based projects which include the development of a specialty ceramics for a host of industrial applications, development of bioceramics for orthopaedic applications, failure analysis of ceramics and components, advanced materials processing, product manufacturing and new product development.

[27 Jun] : Malaysia Has Three Professors On Worldโ€™s Most Influential Scientific Minds List

PETALING JAYA: Three Malaysian academics are among the world’s leading scientific minds, according to a report by business information firm Thomson Reuters.

Titled The World's Most Influential Scientific Minds: 2014, it is the third such list by the firm, with the first published in 2001.

The local scholars honoured were Prof Dr Abdul Latif Ahmad from Universiti Sains Malaysia’s school of chemical engineering, Prof Dr Ishak Hashim from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s science and technology faculty and Prof Dr Saidur Rahman from Universiti Malaya’s engineering faculty.

In a press release, Thomson Reuters stated that those in the list had earned their distinction by publishing the highest number of articles that were most frequently cited by fellow researchers.

The global list, also known as the Highly Cited Researchers report, featured about 3,200 individuals who published the greatest number of highly-cited papers in one of 21 broad fields from 2002 to 2012.

The longer-range study, which updates the world’s most influential researchers listing, saw analysts from the New York-based firm studying citation data over 11 years.

“By analysing these citation connections, one can identify the most impactful people, publications, programs, and more. The listings in Highly Cited Researchers truly reflect positive assessment by peers,” said Thomson Reuters Scientific and Scholarly Research managing director Gordon Macomber.

This was achieved by tracking authors who published numerous articles that ranked among the top 1% of the most cited in their respective fields in the given year of publication.

Researchers named had produced high-impact work that the scientific community judged to be significant and useful in their fields.

[12 May] : MTUN Dan UMPEDAC Jalin Kerjasama Tingkat Inovasi Tenaga Boleh Diperbaharui

MELAKA, 12 Mei (Bernama) -- Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN), dianggotai empat universiti teknikal, menjalin kerjasama dengan University Malaysia Power Dedicated Advanced Centre (UMPEDAC) bagi meningkatkan tahap inovasi tenaga boleh diperbaharui di negara ini.

Naib Canselor Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Yusoff Hassan berkata kerjasama itu membolehkan anggota MTUN iaitu UTeM, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) dan Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), mengembangkan kajian masing-masing dalam bidang tersebut.

"Kerjasama ini diharapkan akan berterusan dan menjadi tradisi bagi ahli akademik bertukar fikiran dalam usaha meningkatkan kecemerlangan akademik dan aktiviti penyelidikan," katanya. Beliau berkata demikian semasa berucap pada perasmian Simposium Penukaran Kuasa dan Tenaga di Kampus UTeM Durian Tunggal di sini Isnin.

MTUN dan UMPEDEC juga menandatangani memorandum persefahaman bagi kerjasama itu yang ditandatangani Ahmad Yusoff; Timbalan Naib Canselor Akademik UniMAP Prof Datuk Dr Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal; Timbalan Naib Canselor Akademik dan Antarabangsa UMP Prof Datuk Dr Murtaza Mohamed; Naib Canselor UTHM Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Noh Dalimin; dan Timbalan Naib Canselor Akademik Universiti Malaya Prof Dr Mohd Hamdi Abdul Shukor mewakili UMPEDAC.

Bertemakan 'Kelestarian Pembangunan Tenaga Boleh Diperbaharui Bagi Masa Depan' simposium berkenaan membuka peluang kepada ahli akademik berkongsi idea, ilmu, inovasi, kreativiti dan pendekatan terkini dalam isu tenaga boleh diperbaharui.

Simposium dirasmikan Timbalan Exco Pelajaran, Pengajian Tinggi, Sains dan Teknologi, Teknologi Hijau dan Inovasi Melaka Md Rawi Mahmud.

Ahmad Yusoff berkata tenaga boleh diperbaharui dilihat sebagai antara penyelesaian kepada masalah berkaitan tenaga dihadapi Malaysia juga dunia pada masa ini.

"Malaysia tidak terkecuali dalam menghadapi cabaran berkaitan tenaga seperti kekurangan tenaga dan pencemaran alam sekitar dalam penjanaan tenaga, maka suatu usaha yang mapan perlu dilakukan bagi mengatasi masalah ini sekarang supaya masalah sama tidak akan berlaku pada masa hadapan.

"Pembangunan tenaga boleh diperbaharui ini mestilah memberi tumpuan kepada faktor yang melibatkan operasi, sistem, proses dan peranti bagi menjadikan ia benar-benar suatu penyelesaian kepada masalah tenaga masa kini," katanya.
