Integrated Lightwave Research Group (ILRG)

Overview

The Integrated Lightwave Research Group (previously known as Photonics Research Group) in the Faculty of Engineering, led by  Professor Dr Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan, was established in early 2009. The group’s initial target was to explore the field on integrated photonics based on glass technology and polymer substrates. To this end, a combination of selective area spray doping and single beam direct UV writing was adopted in making chips containing both optically active and passive functions. The group’s collaboration with the Optoelectronics Research Centre (Southampton) was aimed at producing small form factor distributed Bragg reflected lasers and amplifiers.

A major achievement by the group took place early 2010 when it was granted University of Malaya’s High Impact Research grant to begin work on the hybrid optical fibre-glass chip called Flat Fibre. The grant allowed for the setting up of a single-sided optical drawing tower – currently the only one in a South East Asian university.

Following the commissioning of the optical draw tower facility end of 2010, the group became a focal point in photonic research, forming collaboration with a number of Malaysian universities and research institutions. In addition, it has also embarked on a 5-year Ministry of Higher Education High Impact project on the development of Photonic Biosensors, focusing on rapid detection of the dengue virus. Furthermore, the group has began initial efforts in fabricating multistructured optical fibres, mainly geared towards sensing applications.

University of Malaya High Voltage Laboratory (UMHVL)

Overview

The University of Malaya High Voltage Laboratory (UMHVL) was initially set up in November 2011 in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya, Malaysia. However, the lab is only fully operational since February 2014 when majority of the main equipment were successfully installed and ready for service.

The UMHVL serves as a teaching and research lab in the Department of Electrical Engineering. A taught course and lab experiments associated with the lab are provided to undergraduate and postgraduate students. The lab also serves as a training centre, hosts seminars and provides consultation and professional services in the field of high voltage engineering.
